General Description:
ABCD is seeking IRS-certified tax preparation volunteers to prepare free returns for low-to-moderate income taxpayers as part of the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. Volunteers will use online tax preparation software at tax sites throughout the agency to help taxpayers claim tax credits for which they may be eligible and to provide assistance in accordance with IRS guidelines and applicable ABCD policies. Tax sites are located throughout the city of Boston and in Malden.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Participate in training and orientation sessions hosted by ABCD and the Boston Tax Help Coalition (Training will include tax law and usage of the tax preparation software)
Become certified in tax law and tax preparation by completing provided training
Provide high-quality tax assistance to all taxpayers by ensuring all income, deductions, and allowable credits are claimed
Prepare only those tax returns that are within the volunteer’s certification level(s) and within the scope of the VITA program
Maintain confidentiality of client information through verbal and documented channels
Ensure a copy of the completed return is provided to the taxpayer and all appropriate signatures are obtained
Adhere to ABCD and IRS policies
Skills & Qualifications:
Must be able to attend trainings and learn and apply basic tax knowledge. Basic computer skills for imputing tax return information required. Must be diligent in performing tasks completely and accurately. Must have a strong desire to help people and the ability to work well with diverse populations. Must be able to maintain taxpayer privacy, including the security and confidentiality of information provided.
Languages Needed:
English, Vietnamese, Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole
Length of Commitment:
2018 tax season: mid-January - late April. Prior to the tax season, volunteers must successfully complete training and orientation. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 30 hours during the season, generally for 4.5 hour sessions.
Schedule:
Weekday, evening, and Saturday hours are available.
Tuesdays: 9am-8pm
Wednesdays: 9am-5pm
Thursdays: 9am-8pm
Fridays: 9am-4pm
Saturdays: 10am-2pm (1/27, 2/3, 2/10, 3/31, 4/7, 4/14)
