Volunteer docents lead guided tours and assist with school groups at Historic Stagville. Site staff provide training and support. Docents lead tours for the public or for students, as well as welcoming visitors and orienting them to the site. With school programs, volunteers have opportunities for hands-on activities and interactive skills for students, not simply traditional guided tours. Volunteers can also assist in the visitors center without leading tours, with research or other on-going projects. Extensive prior history knowledge is not necessary, but interest in North Carolina history or African-American history is always helpful! Volunteers need good people skills, a willingness to discuss uncomfortable subjects, and eagerness to share stories about the African-American experience at Stagville.

Stagville was once one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. Owned and operated by the Bennehan and Cameron families, the plantation included over 30,000 acres by 1860. Over 900 people were enslaved on that property. The site contains original structures, including four original slave quarters at Horton Grove. Historic Stagville is free and open to the public. The site offers education, tours, and school programs to teach about the history of slavery in North Carolina.
