Purpose:

To provide support to the function of the Hennepin County Resource Room at Sabathani. The purpose of this volunteer position is to provide resource services to employment counselors and the local community.

Responsibilities:

All of the following duties will be completed with regular communications and in consultation with the resource specialist and the human service supervisor.

  • Researches, communicates, and cultivates relationships with local community-based organizations.
  • Maintain community engagement tracking mechanism.
  • Assist clients of the Job Resource Center with basic computer skills and finding resources.
  • Responds to inquiries, phone calls, and e-mail in a timely and professional manner.
  • Other duties as assigned by the staff and team.

Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Have access to a reliable vehicle for travel.
  • Have a professional and friendly demeanor.
  • Comfortable making "asks" and making "cold calls."
  • Experience with and access to computer, internet, and phone preferred.
  • Highly organized individual, with excellent follow up skills as well as the ability to overcome objections and obstacles in the pursuit of success.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in the English language.
  • Has experience and/or familiarity working in South Minneapolis.
  • Applicants must complete the application, interview and orientation process, provide 2 references, and pass a criminal background check.
Preference:
  • Education: has a bachelor’s degree.
  • Language: Somali and/or Spanish speaking skills.

Time Commitment: As many hours as they can commit to per week. Minimum of three hours per week. The schedule is flexible. A four to six month commitment is requested.Location: Sabathani Community Center, 310 East 38th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55409 and throughout South Minneapolis.

Supervision: The volunteer will be supervised by the Job Resource Specialist, along with the Coordinator of Volunteers. The volunteer will be responsible for reporting the number of hours they serve each month.

  • Training opportunities will be available on an ongoing basis.
  • Volunteers can be reimbursed for mileage expense pertaining to the assignment if requested.

Description

The work of our Department tends to fall into three major areas:

  1. Increasing safety and stability of individuals and families through services such as child and adult protection, providing temporary emergency shelter, and more.
  2. Promoting self-reliance and a livable income through a mixture of federal and state programs, such as SNAP (food support), Child Support, Veterans' Service, cash assistance programs and more.
  3. Improving the health of the community through public health care programs, restaurant inspections, regulating emergency medical services, providing crisis response to behavioral health emergencies, immunization services, a public health clinic, and more.
