Volunteer to be an Academic Coach!

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Multilingual and Multicultural Center, Portland Public Schools

  • 4 people are interested

We are seeking volunteer academic coaches for our Make It Happen program, an extended learning program for English language learners (ELLs). As a volunteer academic coach, you will be meeting with students to assist them with their homework, help them prepare for exams, and complete applications for college.

Make It Happen is a language acquisition and academic support program for high school ELLs. The program supports students as they develop their English language skills and create competitive academic profiles for college admission.

You must be comfortable working in a high-energy environment, respect diversity and the multicultural experience and have the ability to engage with students from many different countries, either one-on-one or in groups. Successful volunteer coaches are critical thinkers, familiar with academic rigors, empathetic and insightful, responsible and committed. This opportunity would be of particular interest to those who are familiar with academics and have flexible daytime schedules. You don't need to have experience, however. A genuine desire to help is ample foundation. A volunteer academic coach has the opportunity to be a positive role model in the life of a young person.
