South Bay Fishing in the City teaches children ages 5-15 the joys of fishing and to discover opportunities to fish at lakes, ponds and streams close to home. Kids also gain an appreciation of outdoor recreation and awareness of basic environmental principles.
Volunteers will assist our Fishing in the City core volunteers with our clinic, instructing participants on the basics of fishing, including safety and ethics, knot tying, casting and rigging. Once they've received instruction from volunteer staff, kids are loaned a rod, provided with bait and tackle, and then try their luck at fishing until noon. Volunteers also escort groups of children to the shoreline to encourage and assist them as they fish.
Volunteers report at 7 AM at Sandy Wool Lake at Ed Levin Park, off Downing Rd. in Milpitas. Some volunteers may be needed as late as noon.
Fishing skills are not required: our core volunteers are experts and they need your help to assist with managing small groups and doing demonstrations at the teaching stations. You simply need to be comfortable with children and with the outdoors. And if you’d like to learn fishing yourself, you'll learn by watching!(this event can be subject to rescheduling depending on weather). Please see dates below:
