YMCA International Services is a unique center of the YMCA of Greater Houston that delivers client-centered programs to refugees, immigrants, and other vulnerable populations to advance their economic independence, social integration, and civic participation. The Y helps newcomers restore hope, build stability, create opportunity and change futures. YMCA International Services is continuously recognized as a leader in the Houston immigrant community.
Cultural Orientation Interpretation Volunteer for YMCA International Services will work with teaching staff to facilitate classroom activities and participation in modules designed to facilitate cultural adjustment and job readiness. The class helps clients understand complex cultural orientation topics such as budgeting, emergency services, health, nutrition, transportation, and more. The volunteer will lead Cultural Orientation Modules in the language of the clientele. Time and dates of volunteer activity dependent upon need.
Qualifications:
- A strong desire to assist in the educational achievement of refugees and immigrants in the Houston Area
- Sensitivity to cultural differences
- Patience, understanding, flexibility, and a positive attitude
- Ability to serve for 10 hours per month for 6 - 12 months
- Fluency in English and a second language (Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Swahili, Amharic, Burmese, etc....) Dependent on need.
Responsibilities
- Complete required training and YMCA Background check
- Leads module based Cultural Orientation Seminars
- Be consistent in attendance
- Be punctual (5-10 minutes early)
- Notify teacher if you will be unable to attend scheduled classes
- Provide regular feedback to teacher regarding student progress
- Record hours
- Communicate any personal needs or concerns to YMCA staff in a timely and appropriate fashion

YMCA International Services, as a center of the YMCA of Greater Houston, provides a number of social service programs for the low-income, immigrant and refugee community. From receiving newly arriving refugees at the airport, locating affordable housing, assisting with a job search, applying for immigration documents, Interpretation Dari/Farsi/Pashto, Spanish to English, Arabic, Swahili, Burmese, French, Mentor, Warehouse, Food Pantry, we do it all!
