2017 Science Olympiad Teams - Grant K-8 School
2017 Science Olympiad Teams

Grant K-8 middle school students, participating in the San Diego regional Science Olympiad (Div. B), have immediate need for coaching in the Battery Buggy event. Students must build a vehicle that uses electrical energy as its sole means of propulsion, quickly travels a specified distance, and stops as close as possible to a Target Point, simultaneously cutting off power to the device. Bonus points can be earned for the vehicle traveling between two cans, with more points awarded the closer the cans are placed. Students will benefit greatly from a coach to guide them in designing, sourcing materials and building the device to meet criteria and perform according to Science Olympiad competition rules.

Coaching can be shared between volunteers and typically requires 1-2 hours per week, for practice time with students, plus prep time. Grant K-8 School is located in Mission Hills, above Old Town San Diego. This is a challenging and extremely rewarding experience. All students volunteer to participate, are enthusiastic and want to be there. They are a lot of fun to work with.

Volunteer clearance, including proof of a negative TB test (from clinic or County Public Health Offices) and LiveScan fingerprinting (free for volunteers) is required by the San Diego Unified School District. Please contact organizer to start process. Competition day is Saturday, February 9, 2019, at Carlsbad High School.

Mission Statement

Grant School Science Olympiad mission: Learn by doing and teach by sharing lead to career building and community growth through science inquiry, application and problem solving.

Description

Grant K-8 School is a public school. Grant middle school students voluntarily participate in the San Diego Regional Science Olympiad, in middle school Division B for grades 5 through 9. These ambitious, hard-working students aim to benefit from teamwork, mentorship and problem solving through fun and rigorous preparation for an annual competition among peers on teams throughout San Diego County. The Science Olympiad is a national science competition, entering its 35th year in its current format, for the 2018-2019 season.

Coaches for building events, lab events, test events - or a combination of these - far enhance the experience for Science Olympiad Division B competitors. The 2019 Science Olympiad in the San Diego region is scheduled for Saturday, February 9, at Carlsbad High School. Volunteer application and clearance, including LiveScan fingerprinting, with the San Diego Unified School District are required for coaches. Get in touch to apply now!

Coaches are needed in all areas. Teams will prepare, starting soon and continuing throughout 4-5 months leading up to the February competition. Students prepare with their coaches an average of 1-2 hours per week, from September through the Olympiad in February. The Grant Science Olympiad program's season culminates in a post-tournament celebration which will be planned for a time during Spring's better weather.
