Preferred Communities a department from YMCA International Services is looking for a volunteer who is familiar with the public transportation system here in Houston and speaks Kinyarwanda. We are looking for patient, understanding, and passionate people interested in helping the refugee population by teaching them how to use the public transit system (metro) here in Houston.
Go one on one with a client and teach them how to use the metro system:
- How to request a stop
- Where to wait for the bus
- How to purchase a metro card
- How to refill a metro card
Qualifications
- Must speak Kinyarwanda
- Complete required training and YMCA Background check
- Familiar with the metro system
- Able to multi-task
- Patience, understanding, flexibility, and a positive attitude
Kinyarwanda speaking volunteers are needed anytime between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. Sometimes you may only be needed for one hour or other times four hours.

YMCA International Services, as a center of the YMCA of Greater Houston, provides a number of social service programs for the low-income, immigrant and refugee community. From receiving newly arriving refugees at the airport, locating affordable housing, assisting with a job search, applying for immigration documents, Interpretation Dari/Farsi/Pashto, Spanish to English, Arabic, Swahili, Burmese, French, Mentor, Warehouse, Food Pantry, we do it all!
