SUMMARY:

The Kentucky Science Center offers a variety of special programs to meet the various needs of its visitors. From summer and school break camps to Scout workshops, the Special Program Volunteer helps ensure that these events are both educational and entertaining for children and families of broad ages and interests. The Volunteer provides valuable assistance in both presenting and assisting with program workshops, activities, and visitor interaction. The Volunteer may also assist with visitor check in and check out; assist in classroom set up and takedown and clean and replenish activity supplies as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Assist the KSC educator in presenting engaging and educational camps and other special events.
  • Engage directly with the visitor-answer questions and offer help- to children and their parents so that they get the most out of their program activity
  • Assist with classroom set up and take down; inventory consumables and replenish as needed
  • Assist in program check in and check out as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience, knowledge or interest in science or education; love of learning
  • Comfortable and at ease in a fast paced classroom or workshop setting; presentation skills a plus
  • Love working with children
  • Organized, dependable and responsible; able to work with limited direct supervision

Special programs are mostly offered on weekends between 9am and 6pm; Break camps vary from one day to week-long programs during the week during JCPS school breaks including summer break.

TRAINING:
All volunteers participate in the New Volunteer Orientation. Learning Facilitators will then receive orientation and training specific to the Visitor Experience (VE) Department. Since all VE Volunteers are considered an integral part of the department’s staff, volunteers’ schedules will be determined directly by the VE department; volunteers receive a staff/volunteer schedule via email from the VE department. Schedules are completed in 3-week increments, the VE volunteer will notify no later than one week prior of availability for the coming 3 weeks.

SUMMARY:

The Kentucky Science Center offers a variety of special programs to meet the various needs of its visitors. From summer and school break camps to Scout workshops, the Special Program Volunteer helps ensure that these events are both educational and entertaining for children and families of broad ages and interests. The Volunteer provides valuable assistance in both presenting and assisting with program workshops, activities, and visitor interaction. The Volunteer may also assist with visitor check in and check out; assist in classroom set up and takedown and clean and replenish activity supplies as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the KSC educator in presenting engaging and educational camps and other special events.
  • Engage directly with the visitor-answer questions and offer help- to children and their parents so that they get the most out of their program activity
  • Assist with classroom set up and take down; inventory consumables and replenish as needed
  • Assist in program check in and check out as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience, knowledge or interest in science or education; love of learning
  • Comfortable and at ease in a fast paced classroom or workshop setting; presentation skills a plus
  • Love working with children
  • Organized, dependable and responsible; able to work with limited direct supervision
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Must pass a background check

TIME COMMITMENT:
