Refugee Volunteering: Cultural Mentoring & Exchange

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Lutheran Family Services of Rocky Mountains: Denver Metro

Camp

Our Cultural Mentoring and Exchange Program is basically a "first friend" program for newly arrived Refugee families. We match groups of 3 to 6 volunteers with a newly arrived family and ask for a 6 month commitment during which time each volunteer will spend a minimum of 2 hours a week or 8 hours a month with the family they’ve been assigned.

The volunteers provide a friendly and welcoming presence as the family becomes acquainted with their new home and surroundings. Depending on the needs of the family, the volunteers will help the family with practicing their English, financial literacy/making a budget, cultural understanding and life skills, and job readiness.

The first step is to attend a virtual Refugee 101/Volunteer Training session. We generally have trainings on a Wednesday evening (6- 9 pm) once each month. For more information about this or other volunteer opportunities, or to register for an orientation please contact our Volunteer Coordinators, Alejandra Peralta & Maya John, at alejandra.peralta@lfsrm.org or maya.john@lfsrm.org.
