LDK’s work is centered on children, youth and poor families. Over the years Learning and Development Kenya has offered educational programs to the children and youth with the aim of making them become self sustainable and help improve living standards of their respective families.
Currently LDK provides education to more than 300 students, aged between 5 and 20, from the poorest neighborhoods of Nakuru, Kenya’s fourth largest city. Without LDK, these children may not attend school at all, as the government schools - while technically free - have burdensome financial requirements such as required uniforms and desks.
In addition, LDK runs a children’s home as one of its core programs. The Virginia children’s home has been providing shelter to orphans who have nowhere to go since 2003. Currently it is accommodating sixty five (65) children. Aside from education, it provides them with shelter, three meals a day and medical care.
Volunteer Child Sponsorship Coordinator Position:
With increased number of children who need support LDK is seeking volunteers to coordinate its child sponsorship program with a view to expanding it to accommodate more needy children that can be sustained through the sponsorship program. Volunteers will use their skills and networks to help LDK achieve this goal. Individual child sponsorship budget has been tabulated but the coordinators can review, adjust and advise LDK management accordingly.
Our facilities in Nakuru - nearby the Nakuru National Park (home to flamingos) provide an opportunity for volunteers to Kenya to see and understand local culture.
