LDK School
Children in a class with previous volunteers at LDK

LKD wishes to initiate a bakery project as an income generating project for Nakuru City Schools / Virginia Children’s Home in the Rhonda slums of Nakuru, Kenya. The bakery will be owned and run by the NGO Learning and Development Kenya.

The Bakery project will produce high quality bread and cakes for the local population while also creating jobs for unemployed youth. It is expected that within the first year the project costs will breakeven and thereafter start generating profits that will be additional income to Learning and Development Kenya, and ultimately marginalized children in the Rhonda slums, which is the primary target group for the NGO.

LDK is seeking the services of volunteers to fundraise the required capital for the bakery project. Volunteers will be part of the project and would be expected to guide the project through full implementation. A willingness to work from the project site will be most welcomed

Location:

Mission Statement

LDK’s mission is to provide a quality education to the children who are most in need, equipping them not only with practical knowledge and skills, but also with the optimism, open mindedness, and drive to lift their communities out of extreme poverty.

Description

LDK’s work is centered on children, youth and poor families. Over the years Learning and Development Kenya has offered educational programs to the children and youth with the aim of making them become self sustainable and help improve living standards in their respective families. Since its inception, LDK has provided education to more than 11,000 children. Without LDK, these children may not attend school at all, as the government schools - while technically free - have burdensome financial requirements such as required uniforms and desks.

Goals of the program include: provide quality education to children/youth; support poor families to improve on their family income through provision of revolving loans; and implement educational programs on HIV/ADS for the youth to help break down the debilitating stigma associated with HIV/AIDS and create environmental awareness within the communities we work with.

Our projects include a school for children from poor families and a home for orphans since 2003.
