Circles Laurel Highlands

Circles Laurel Highlands is a program that inspires and equips families and communities to thrive and resolve poverty. It is two-fold -- it works with parents and children living in poverty to gain the skills necessary to be successful in today's society, and it educates and engages people from the middle and upper class to join in the effort as Allies (mentors), volunteers, leaders, and advocates for community change.

Circles is grounded in research that shows that families from inter-generational poverty need multiple strategies to overcome systemic and cultural barriers to poverty and they must build strong social capital based on human connectedness with peers across class lines in order to succeed in moving out of poverty. Almost always, families living in inter-generational poverty are not equipped with the tools or the relationships they need to move out of their situations.

Become a mentor to a family! Work one on one with a family to help them build the tools and relationships they need to move out of poverty into a state of self sufficiency. Our program meets once a week on Wednesdays from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Dinner is served during the meeting.

In order to become a volunteer you must:
Must be 18 years of age or older
Must live at or above 200% of the federal poverty guidelines
Must speak and read English
Must live within or be willing to travel regularly to service area
Must be willing to attend weekly classes
Must be willing to build intentional relationships across class and cultural lines
