AmeriCorps VISTAmembers are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, promotional and/or financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and assist low-income communities. Members earn a modest living allowance of $12,300, limited benefit options and after a year of service are eligible for an Education Award of $5,775 or post-service stipend. Responsibilities for this job:


City of Wichita Office of Community Services, VISTA Youth Advocate Coordinator

  • Measuring Wichita’s risk and protective factors relating to gangs and youth violence. Establishing a network of accessible organizations to provide intervention and ongoing services for Wichita’s low-income, at-risk youth. (This network, by design, will ensure that youth have the opportunity to curb violence, break free from the cycle of generational poverty, and increase the quality life of families.

  • Work with the organizations who are already engaged, and recruit others to form an Advocates for Youth Coalition. Use the Strategic Planning Tool developed by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, to identify the risk and protective factors that are present in the community, as well as those that are missing.
