OUR MISSION

The Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) serves to empower youth to discover their greater potential through extraordinary at-sea experiences aboard educational sailing vessels built to train and equip young people with 21st-century leadership skills, and inspire maritime and STEM career paths.

How Will You Contribute to Our Program?

Los Angeles Maritime Institute is an extraordinary place where the opportunities we provide are nearly endless. We accept volunteers with or without sailing experience who like working with kids. We will train you to become a deckhand and help kids learn how to sail historic tall ships. You will have the opportunity to work with our Captains and learn how to mentor kids to develop life skills, leadership skills, and become more excited about their education through sailing.

Description

TopSail Youth Program is an education and adventure experience aboard a tall ship consisting of day sails, voyages, or both. Skills gained include team-building, problem-solving, decision-making, planning, self-reliance and leadership.

A full program consists of a series of day sails scheduled over a period of several months. Each day’s activities build on the skills and knowledge gained during the preceding sailing days. Participants then utilize their new-found sense of empowerment and teamwork on the multi-day voyage where they sleep aboard and sail the vessel, prepare meals, determine each day’s activities and much more.
