Interpret for Free Tax Program

The VITA Program allows community members to complete tax returns for free. Many of our VITA clients will be requesting services in a language other than English. If you can speak Spanish, French, Amharic, Chinese, or another language, then we could use your help!

Interpreters will be needed at the CAA office in Rockville as well as the TESS Center in Silver Spring. When clients make an appointment for tax return preparation, staff will note whether they need an Interpreter. Then the Volunteer Coordinator will reach out to ask if you are available during the appointment. You will sit with the client an another volunteer to discuss personal documents and financial information.

Interpreters are required to complete a brief online certification. This is the IRS Standards of Volunteer Conduct, which describes client privacy and VITA procedures. Interpreters will be welcome to take on additional roles if desired. These may include scheduling appointments over the phone, greeting clients that enter VITA sites, or completing tax returns.

The VITA Program operates June-October and January-April. Shifts can be flexible with your schedule during business hours and some evenings. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Knowledge of tax policies is not required. Please contact Erica Bentley, the Volunteer Coordinator of CAA, for more information.
