Become a Literacy Connection Volunteer Tutor in this 12-hour training workshop. Help to make a change in someone's life and become a Volunteer Literacy Tutor! The Literacy Connection has over 80 adult learners in our community waiting to be matched with a tutor like you! Would you like to help? Our Tutors help other adults with their English literacy skills, at a time and place convenient for both tutor and learner. NO PRIOR TEACHING OR TUTORING EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED! We'll train and guide you through the tutoring process. Join us at one of our upcoming Tutor Orientations to learn more! Must be at least 18 years old.
Not sure if tutoring is for you? Join us on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. for "Introduction to The Literacy Connection & Tutoring" to learn more. Training will start after the intro and there is no obligation to stay if you feel our program is not for you.
Training continues on Wednesday, March 7, Monday, March 12, and Wednesday, March 14, 2018 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Course Structure
This is an instructor-led, 12-hour course, with some online and out of classroom assignments. Online options are available to complete missed material, if necessary. Tutor trainees participate in discussion, role playing and interactive activities as they learn strategies and background information necessary to tutor adults.
Course Materials and Cost
Tutor training is free, but there is a $35 fee to cover the textbook, LITSTART: Strategies for Adult Literacy and ESL Tutors, and other handouts. Cash or a check made payable to The Literacy Connection is collected at the end of the first course meeting.

The Literacy Connection is dedicated to helping adults acquire fundamental literacy skills by teaching them to read, write, speak and understand English through one-on-one volunteer tutoring and small group instruction in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.
Description
The Literacy Connection, an affiliate of ProLiteracy, is a non-profit, community-based 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1983 by Gail Borden Public Library staff. The organization’s service area is spread throughout 16 northwest Chicago suburban communities: Algonquin, Bartlett, Carpentersville, Cary, Elgin, South Elgin, East Dundee, West Dundee, Gilberts, Hanover Park, Hampshire, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Streamwood, and Schaumburg located in Cook, Kane and McHenry Counties.
The organization offers learner-centered instruction in settings that meet individual needs. In the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, the organization provides free literacy and English language tutoring to adults. The twelve-hour tutor training teaches volunteers to help individuals learn to read, write, speak and understand English better. Instruction is offered in any public location or remotely at convenient times. Most learners are tutored at a minimum of four hours each month for at least a one-year commitment.
