Oakland Literacy Council is looking for compassionate volunteers to tutor low-literate adults in Oakland County for two hours a week for a year. Volunteers meet students on a one-on-one basis at a time convenient to both of them. Tutors may work with English language learners or U.S.-born adults.
This is a volunteer experience where you see the direct impact you're making on the life of another adult. All students learn to read the things most of us take for granted, such as a prescription label, an insurance policy and signage. Foreign-born students also learn to understand spoken English and speak the language themselves.
In light of Covid-19, all tutoring is taking place virtually. When restrictions against face-to-face meetings are lifted, tutors and students have the option of meeting in a public location like a library.
No previous teaching experience is required. Tutors receive training. Contact us today to sign up for a 30-minute information session to learn more!
