Basic Internship Description: This internship supports the Business Recycling Program, which is a one-year grant from the Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District to implement or enhance recycling and composting programs in the business sector. This internship will provide an in-depth look at waste management in a business setting. The intern will assist a business in designing a new recycling and waste diversion program or strengthening an existing program, educate employees on waste diversion topics and find creative solutions to changing behaviors in the workforce.
Major Responsibilities: The internship will be a hands-on learning experience, from researching best practices of business recycling programs to working with the companies’ green team members and sustainability managers to design and implement the program. The intern will also assist with designing surveys and educational literature, PowerPoint presentations for employee trainings and contract logistics with the haulers. Ultimately, the intern will be responsible for setting their own appointments and leading recycling consultations with business leaders.
Skills/Experience Needed: excellent written and oral communications skills, moderate amount of recycling knowledge, strong desire to learn about waste management, professionalism while working in the business community, knowledge of Microsoft Office, familiar with working in an office environment, and ability to work independently.
Time Commitment: Flexible Days/Wk: 2-4 Hours/Wk: 10-20
