Anixter Center's Literacy program provides a customized curriculum combining literacy, tutoring and life skills to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.

Participants and volunteer tutors usually meet once a week for an hour (or more) and cover such topics as:

Literacy (life skills, journaling, creative writing)

Tutoring (reading, writing, math, geography, history, computers, GED preparation)

Over 20 years ago, Anixter Center realized that literacy was essential in its efforts to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. To answer that need, Anixter Center created the first and only Chicago area literacy program that focuses on the unique needs of individuals with disabilities. This hybrid curriculum takes literacy and tutoring beyond books and into the lives of its participants. Goals can vary from the ability to understand prescriptive drug instructions, reading a map to plan a pathway to a destination and back, or finding a job.

Anixter Center Literacy is open M-F 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and on Thursdays until 7 PM for evening classes or matches. For information about tutoring or participating in the Literacy program, please contact Literacy Coordinator at 773-929-8200x265 or lkartali@anixter.org for more details.

What participants have said about being in our program:

"I volunteer because it inspires me. I am inspired to see people learn and by learning, they are enabled and empowered.... I wish I could find the words to describe the feeling I have in helping these individuals! - Anixter Center Volunteer, Tim

"Volunteering at Anixter Center's Deaf Literacy Program allows me to get to know an amazing person who I may not have otherwise met." - Anixter Center Volunteer, Sara

"By coming to Anixter Center, I'm learning to read out loud. I can follow signs, directions, and understand writing and math.... I can communicate with more people, I don't give up as much as I used to, I feel happier and eager to learn, not so sheltered from the world. " - Anixter Center Student, Kiersten
