Position Summary

To assist the Director of Diversity and Inclusion with special projects for the Alzheimer's Association Minnesota-North Dakota. There are three internships, each working with different communities: 1) The African American and African born community; 2) The Latino/Hispanic community; and 3) The Hmong community. The primary focus is demographic analysis, stakeholder interviews, community outreach and education within the designated community.

  1. Student enrolled in a Sociology, Social Work, Public Heath, Gerontology, Psychology or other health and human services degree or certificate program
  2. Interest in older adults, aging services, and Alzheimer’s and related dementia.
  3. Interest in health disparities, health equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  4. Capability to assist with the development of messaging and material to support cultural sensitivity and responsiveness.
  5. Comfortable connecting with churches and community of faith organizations
  6. Positive attitude
  7. Ability to work independently
  8. Respectful of person without regard to gender, race, culture, religion, sexual orientation or economic condition
  9. Basic computer skills
  10. Strong oral and written English language skills
  11. It is preferred, but not required, that the intern is bi-lingual in: 1) Somali or West African language; or 2) Spanish; or 3) Hmong.
Position Requirements

Individual will need or develop:

  1. Familiarity with the Alzheimer's Association Minnesota-North Dakota and community disease-related resources, programs and events.
  1. A basic working knowledge and awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, research updates, referral information for Alzheimer's Association Minnesota-North Dakota resources as well as outside resources.
  2. Attend educational opportunities as assigned.
  1. Possess strong written, verbal, and listening communication skills.
  2. Must have basic computer skills.

Individual could perform and gain experience in the following activities:

  1. Demographic research, analysis and summary
  2. Qualitative market research - interviewing community stakeholders and organizations.
  3. Community outreach and education in diverse communities
  4. Provider outreach (hospital, clinic, physician, health professionals)
  5. Development of cultural sensitivity and responsiveness outreach materials in collaboration with the Marketing team.
  6. Database assistance.
  7. Working closely with staff and volunteers.
  8. Public speaking engagements
  9. Group work, including observing community meetings and trainings
  10. Involvement in Diversity and Inclusion Board committee and work group meetings
  11. Networking with other community organizations through grant funded projects
