The WAND Copy Editor’s primary responsibility is ensuring consistent quality of all written content in the WAND, including stories, letters from the Executive Director, sidebars, and copy that accompanies graphics. The Copy Editor will examine each story and element for grammar, spelling, voice, and tone, and provide a critical eye before each issue is sent to print.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit each story’s text and correct for grammar, spelling, voice, and tone, using Chicago Manual style guidelines.

  • Work with Layout Editor and Graphic Designer to ensure that copy accompanying graphics is held to a consistent high standard.

  • Help WAND Team develop the overall theme and goals for each issue, including promotion of current campaigns and programs, encouraging donations, driving membership and interest in chapters program, etc.

  • Other copy editing tasks as needed.

  • Add WAND puns to stories every so often. E.g., "Do you WAND to learn more about this campaign? Visit thehpalliance.org/campaign" or "The Yule Ball is a WANDerful way to raise money for the HPA while rocking out with your friends!"

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with Chicago Manual style guidelines.

  • Demonstrated experience with copy editing for publications.

  • Understanding of the HPA, fan activism, and fandom communities.

  • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines.

  • Feel comfortable operating in a start-up environment and working with weirdos who have an offbeat sense of humor.

  • Deep, all-consuming passion for social justice, literature, and popular culture.

Our members and chapters have raised over $123,000 for Partners In Health and sent five cargo planes of life-saving supplies to Haiti, compelled Warner Bros. to change the sourcing of their Harry Potter chocolate to be 100% UTZ or Fairtrade, and donated of over 315,000 books across the world through our Accio Books campaign, among much more!
