Laura H. Carnell

With close to a thousand students and one art teacher, Carnell's capacity for the arts is extremely limited. We are looking for volunteers to help expand our arts program through classroom management and project assistance!

Purpose: Classroom will be more easily managed allowing for student education to be enriched with higher quality and more varied arts programming.
Results of Service: With your help, we can create safer, more manageable classrooms that will lead to students learning higher level creativity, critical thinking, and self empowerment.
Suggested Activities:

  • Work as a classroom assistant helping to dispense materials, mentor children, help with art projects, etc.
  • Help to exhibit rotating art shows throughout the school to increase student pride and arts legitimacy within school culture.
  • Help lead the creation and completion of indoor murals.
  • Help facilitate art club after school in the spring.
  • Potential outside programs such as ASAP for Drama or the Claymobile are expected to partner with the school.
  • Opportunities to be creative and lead your own workshop! Past volunteers have run an origami workshop and we are always excited for new ideas.
Timeframe: We are looking for volunteers that can commit to at least one day per week. Any day between 9:00 - 12:10 or 12:50 - 2:30, or both. Art club in the spring will take place after school (3:30).
Supervision: Orientation and clearances to be handled by Caleb Fortwangler, Community Partnerships Coordinator. Training and mentoring provided by Carnell's art teacher, Ms. Schulz.
Benefits: Volunteers will have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of nearly one thousand students. While on the job, volunteers will receive valuable training from our art teacher and experience working with children. Looks great on a resume and volunteers will be provided with a good reference upon request.

We have very flexible schedules at Carnell, please reach out! We look forward to working with you and thank you for taking an interest in our school.

About Carnell Laura H School

Location:

Mission Statement

Carnell aims to be the leading project-based learning elementary school of choice for Philadelphia students. It is our goal for every student to achieve academic growth and engage in an inspiring, challenging, and personalized project-based learning environment that prepares students for success. We do this through: A curriculum that makes standards come alive for students by connecting learning to real-world issues and needs. A quality team of dynamic leaders, teachers, students, and parents that embrace the power of student-engaged assessment practices to building student ownership of learning, focus students on reading standards-based learning targets, and drive student achievement. A school culture of respect, responsibility, courage, and kindness, where students and adults are committed to quality work and citizenship.

Description

Located in one of the most diverse neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Carnell school serves nearly one thousand K-5 students every day. At least 16 different languages are spoken. The rich diversity we enjoy at Carnell grants the community a wealth of resources, though these resources are not always effectively utilized. We are committed to connect these resources and the school, to maintaining ongoing dialogue with the community, and to ensure that we are accurately addressing and responding to both the strengths and challenges faced.

One such challenge Carnell’s community faces is economic. The district has identified every single one of our students comes from an economically disadvantaged family. Though not a community school, Carnell has formed a partnership with the Mayor’s Office on Education’s Community Schools Initiative thanks to a request by councilwoman Cherelle Parker. Through our community partnerships, Carnell aims to act as a resource hub for the families of Oxford Circle.

Chosen among the first 4 schools in the district to undergo the School Redesign Initiative, Carnell is entering the fourth year of its project-based learning redesign process. The curriculum now focuses on student engagement and building student ownership of learning through real-world connections. Again, this ambitious undertaking is only made possible through the vital relationships with our community partners.
