The Parents as Teachers (PAT) Outreach VISTA will create and implement systems designed to reach more parents of young children in meaningful ways. The VISTA will research, develop, and implement a multi-generational training program to support stress reduction for parents of young children. The VISTA will develop communication tools and social media plan designed to reach parents of young children in the Kansas City area.
Parents As Teachers (PAT) is often the first touch point for families of young children in the Kansas City Public School District. Research shows that children living in poverty hear 30 million fewer words than their more affluent peers by the age of 5, meaning these children enter elementary school with a skill deficit so vast they often never catch up. One of PAT goals is to close the 30 million word gap by building positive parent engagements habits while children are young. Research shows that supporting responsive relationships, strengthen core life skills, and reducing sources of stress can support.
VISTAs receive a modest living stipend for their service. Learn more about the benefits of service here: https://www.vistacampus.gov/in-service/benefits-service

Mission Statement
The mission of Turn the Page KC is to mobilize the community to achieve reading proficiency at grade level or above for all third graders in Kansas City, Missouri.
Description
Educational attainment is instrumental to individual success. It is the greatest equalizer in securing social mobility and the ability to lead a healthy productive life. For Kansas City, it is also the most important factor in determining our region’s economic growth and future prosperity. Mayor James recognizes the importance of reversing this cycle. He has made education his top economic development priority, and launched a city-wide campaign to address the issue. To institute sustainable generational change, we must begin early at the most basic level, ensuring our students have the most important fundamental skill: the ability to read. Turn the Page KC is now a nonprofit organization led by Mayor James and a dedicated Board of Directors comprising of business, education, philanthropic, and community leaders.
