ORGANIZATION: National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) El Paso

NAMI Volunteers

PROGRAMS VOLUNTEER:

Volunteers whom have a lived experience with mental illness; a family member, caregiver, or close friends of individuals with mental illness can be trained for free to become a NAMI educational program teacher, support group facilitator, or program presenter. Trainings and classes occur yearly. Please call NAMI El Paso for more information.

OFFICE VOLUNTEER:

Volunteer works in the NAMI El Paso office. Provides support with filing, phones, data entry, typing, and mailings, making copies and greeting the public. Flexible hours on weekdays are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Coordinate time with Office Manager. Minimum time commitment: one 3-hour period per week.

OCCASIONAL/ON CALL OFFICE VOLUNTEER:

Helps with photocopying, labeling, setting up class folders, organizing file cabinets, as needed.

WRITER OF ARTICLE(S) FOR NEWSLETTER and/or PRESS RELEASES

Occasionally writes an article for the NAMI El Paso newsletter. All articles must be related to the topic of mental health. All articles are published at the discretion of the Editor.

Writes press releases and submits them to local press, radio and TV stations, Direction will be provided by staff, board and committee members and chair.

SPEAKER’S BUREAU MEMBER:

Volunteer will give public presentations about NAMI El Paso to a wide array of audiences including service clubs, churches and other community groups. Presentation material is provided by NAMI El Paso and adheres to NAMI guidelines.

OUTREACH/HEALTH FAIRS

Volunteer will help with NAMI informational tables at local community events. Volunteer will directly interact with public to share information about NAMI. Volunteer helps with set up, staffing the table and break-down. Volunteer must be able to lift at least 25 pounds to help with set-up. Dates and times vary.

ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE MEMBER:

Volunteer works on NAMI El Paso public image and recognition within the community. Many people in El Paso County have never heard of our services, and we want to make sure that people know what we do, increase awareness about mental health among the public, and advance the Mission and purpose of NAMI El Paso. This committee develops ideas and executes them, including communicating with the local press, radio, TV stations, Ft. Bliss.

Promotes advocacy throughout El Paso County and provides information to the membership and general public regarding important mental health issues and policies. The information is disseminated through meetings, our website and print materials, including the newsletter.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE MEMBER:

Develops and implements strategies to increase and retain members.

Description

NAMI El Paso offers classes for those personally affected and for the family members and loved ones of those with mental illnesses. These classes are invaluable to the family and to the consumer. You will learn coping skills, problem solving techniques, and information about the various mental illnesses, medications and advocacy.

All classes, support groups, trainings, and materials are free of charge, and are offered in English and Spanish. Our classes and family support groups are facilitated by family members who have previously taken the class and trained to become teachers.

The more we learn about mental illness, the more we can help our loved ones and ourselves. Find Help. Find Hope.
