Wolfe Street Academy is a neighborhood charter school operated by the Baltimore Curriculum Project in Upper Fells Point, serving 235 students in grades Pre-K through 5. Wolfe is nestled on a city corner among row houses and small businesses, on a site that has housed a succession of public schools since 1852. Although the buildings have changed, these schools have always served the most recent immigrant population to seek a new and better life in Baltimore’s original port neighborhood. Wolfe Street Academy continues that tradition. Approximately 80% of our students come from recent immigrant households, and speak Spanish at home. Approximately 55% of our students receive ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction, and over 95% come from low-income households.

At Wolfe Street Academy, we have drawn together three key factors for success - Great People, Great Programs and Great Strategies. With the support of the Baltimore Curriculum Project, Wolfe Street Academy staff implements quality-researched curriculum in an individualized manner so that every student learns. The entire school community sees that the challenges inherent in poverty and immigration pose some of the most significant barriers to student success, and seek to answer those needs through the Community School Initiative.

The WSA After School Program is in need of a chess coach! Our chess club meets twice per week. The students range from 2nd - 5th grade. The chess coach would supervise and guide up to 10 students during practices and tournaments. There are 3-4 Saturday tournaments throughout the year. The chess program is a partnership with the Baltimore Kids Chess League. Chess coaches receive a stipend from BKCL ranging from $600 to $1500 per year.

Mission Statement

To develop, successfully implement and spread an innovative, sustainable, and replicable model of educational reform that will improve student outcomes while effecting systemic change. In doing so, the Baltimore Curriculum Project will raise the educational standards and possibilities for disadvantaged youth, Baltimore City schools and the Baltimore City school system alike.

Description

Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) was founded in 1996 with a single purpose: to transform the educational landscape in Baltimore City with research-based educational strategies, intensive teacher training, and extensive support for principals. BCP, in partnership with the Baltimore City school system, is the largest charter operator in Maryland with a network of some of the most highly acclaimed neighborhood charter schools in the state: Hampstead Hill Academy, Govans Elementary, Wolfe Street Academy, City Springs Elementary and Middle, and, new for the 2017-2018 school year, Frederick Elementary.

Wolfe Street Academy is a Community School and Conversion Charter School. We serve students and their families in the Upper Fells Point neighborhood, providing high quality academic programming and helping families develop resources that allow them to overcome barriers to success. Our school serves over 200 students from Pre-K to 5th grade on a site that has housed a succession of public schools since 1852. The buildings have changed but these schools have always served the most recent immigrant population who seek new and better lives in Baltimore. Over 80% of our students speak a language other than English at home and 96% of our students come from low-income households. Wolfe Street Academy has been offering its own comprehensive and robust after school program for 10 years.
