Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to volunteer as a writing, research or art coach in the classroom. You'll support, engage, and encourage students as they work on their projects.
This workshop needs your support in Washington Heights. To sign up, please contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code. We'll supply the school address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:
Program 3226EO-P
Date: Tuesday, December 12th, 2017
Time: 1:20 - 2:50 PM
About the workshop: Sixth-graders read Marti’s Song for Freedomby Emma Otheguy, a bilingual biography of José Martí, a Cuban activist who dedicated his life to fighting for liberty, abolition of slavery, and Cuba’s political independence. The book is written in verse with excerpts from Martí’s seminal work, Versos sencillos. Students will go on a trip to explore Cuban culture and cuisine and, working with writing coaches, write short verses answering the question: What does freedom mean to you?
