ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
Sprouts is a nonprofit that teaches kids from all socioeconomic backgrounds what REAL food is all about. We do this through hands-on cooking with REAL chefs from hotshot restaurants like Tartine Bakery, Delfina, and Boulevard and with the support of Jamie Oliver and the endorsement of Alice Waters on our advisory board!
We fulfill our mission through 5 main programs:
Free Classes at Girls Inc for in-need young girls
After School Cooking Classes for Bay Area students from all backgrounds
Classes and Camps on weekends and school breaks for diverse Bay Area youth
Chef-in-training Internships for at-risk young adults that want to change their lives around through a culinary career
Classes for children with special needs
We achieve our mission thanks to the dedication of 13 full and part-time team members, 10 interns, 20+ volunteers, and 100+ local chefs.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION:
Sprouts is looking for an enthusiastic, culinary or nutritional enthusiast to help our Sprouts Chef Instructors lead a 3 hour cooking class in the Oakland area! This class is a ton of fun, and the kids are always jazzed to learn new recipes and taste new ingredients! No formal cooking experience is required - just a love for working with kids and trying new recipes! A minimal amount of pre-class prep may be required.
We focus on simple, delicious and nutritious recipes that allow plenty of room for our aspiring chefs to add their own creative twist! At the end of each class, every child will enjoy the recipe that they made and, if you're lucky, have some to take home to share!
All skill levels welcome!
