Do you like working with kids? Do you want to be part of a team making great memories for families? Consider working with Minnesota Reading at one of our sites this December! Newport Head Start is teaming up with the Kiwanis club to bring together school staff and families for a night of fun. Families Doing Good Together is a yearly event that the fabulous Kiwanis club arranges and Reading Corps is helping out. We need volunteers to help hand out literacy bags, run reading activities, and other possibly help with other event duties. Come be a part of a great team and have fun while helping out a local school and the families they serve!

Mission:

Through providing volunteer, planning, and programming support to family literacy and math nights, we can help students to be more engaged in their learning, and help to bring families and school staff together.

Position:

Family Event Volunteer

Duties include:

  • Implement literacy related activities as assigned by Volunteer Coordinator
  • Interact with students and parents
  • Help motivate students to improve their reading skills, self-esteem and goal attainment
  • Make reading and learning a fun experience
  • Helping facilitate a fun environment while working with school staff and students
  • Abide by the student confidentiality agreement, volunteer guidelines and school guidelines
  • Arrive on time and prepared for events
  • Complete Volunteer surveys when requested by RMI Volunteer Coordinator

Commitment:

Families Doing Good Together is a one night special event. Expect to be on site for 2-3 hours, arriving 15-30 before event begins for orientation.


Training:

There will be an initial 5-10 minute phone screen before the event. Event orientation and training is provided by MRC Volunteer Coordinator prior to participating in certain activities.


Qualifications:

  • Responsible, dependable, patient, flexible, and motivated
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Positive role model
  • Basic knowledge of reading and writing skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations
  • Certain opportunities may require the successful completion of a background check

Minnesota Reading Corps--the nation’s largest AmeriCorps tutoring program--and Minnesota Math Corps are helping ensure that children become successful readers by the end of third grade and proficient in math by the end of eighth grade. We train and place more than 1,500 literacy and math tutors each year in schools across Minnesota to work with children age 3 through grade 8.
