Area Agency on Aging's Foster Grandparents

The PreK Mentoring Project is a collaboration of The United Way of Palm Beach County, Children's Services Council, and the Area Agency on Aging.

The PreK Mentoring Project is an opportunity for 3 and 4-year-olds at childcare centers in Riviera Beach and surrounding areas to increase their readiness for Kindergarten through a supportive, one-on-one relationship with a mentor. Children meet with their mentors to practice the literacy and social-emotional skills necessary to be successful in "the big school" within the safety of a supportive, comfortable relationship.

Based on the Foster Grandparent model, senior volunteers (55+) from these same communities volunteer an average of 15-20 hours per week in a childcare center; serving as a mentor for up to four 3- and 4-year olds. This inter-generational approach builds bonds within the community and has shown to be beneficial for both the children and mentors.

Mentors are trained by the Area Agency on Aging and receive on-going support and learning opportunities throughout the year. A small stipend may be available for volunteers' time, as well as for travel/transportation and food.

This opportunity is only open to volunteers aged 55 or older who reside in Riviera Beach and surrounding areas.

The program is overseen by the Area Agency on Aging -
