A Big Brother or Big Sister is a mature, responsible individual who is matched on a one-to-one basis with a 6 - 14 year old child. The child may be from a single or two parent family in need of additional support and guidance. A Big serves as an adult companion, is a positive role model, is a friend and listener, is an instructor and limit-setter, is a resource and a guide. Whether the child needs help with school work, an opportunity to try new activities, or just some extra attention to boost their self confidence, a Big Brother or Big Sister provides this support through their consistent, caring friendhsip. Normally, we ask that you spend 30 minutes to a few hours each week with your Little Brother or Little Sister. We understand that some weeks you may spend more time together and other times it may be less. Some matches meet every two weeks. We will match based on your time commitment and areas of interest. Your activities can be anything from hanging out with a child in school during their lunch to doing community activities like fishing, baking, or rollerblading, to doing school work, washing a car or cleaning a garage together. You will participate in whatever activities the two of you enjoy doing together and is acceptable to the parent. If you are at least 16 years old and reside in the Merrill area, call 715-848-7207. We can arrange an informational meeting to answer all of your questions and provide more information about the program.
