Our 11th Hour volunteers freely offer their gifts of time and companionship to patients and families experiencing the final hours.
11th Hour volunteers are often the most experienced of all hospice volunteers. They can just be present with the patient, talk to them, reassuring them or holding their hand. These volunteers learn through experience the need for companionship either for the patient or the family or both during their final journey here on earth.
Volunteers for the 11th Hour program receive extensive special training. If you are interested in being an 11th Hour volunteer, please contact Krystal Anderson (Volunteer Coordinator) at 913-287-5678 or via email at krystal.anderson@ascendhealth.com.
All Ascend Hospice volunteers receive extensive training, free of charge. Our training covers the history of hospice care, family dynamics, HIPAA, boundaries, hand washing, infection control, blood-borne pathogens, safety precautions, pain management, aromatherapy, and the final stages of dying and death. In-services are provided quarterly, in addition to a program designed to help volunteers deal with stress and self-care management.

Ascend Hospice, formerly Care Alternatives, is committed to providing extremely exceptional care and services with integrity and compassion. Founded in 1995, Ascend Hospice is a nondenominational, multicultural hospice and palliative care provider built on the belief that hospice services should reflect the life we live - one lived fully and with dignity. With offices in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Missouri, California and Virginia, the company currently provides care for approximately 850 patients in nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, hospitals and private homes. Dedicated to a holistic approach, Ascend Hospice’s expert interdisciplinary teams provide state-of-the art hospice care, including pain control and symptom management through holistic and traditional therapies, as well as emotional support for patients and families.
