Help recently resettled refugees with English

Be a volunteer English Coach for a refugee, asylee or new immigrant. Some of our volunteer coaches speak Arabic and other languages, many do not. Some volunteer coaches are teachers, many are not. Most of our learners are Beginners or Beginner/Intermediate learners with about 1-2 years in the US. A few of our learners are professionals with prior education in their home country.

We supply our volunteer Coaches with flash cards, visuals, and other learning materials. Our adult learning instructor can help you locate lesson plans that are a good fit for your learner. You and your learner set a schedule of approximately 4 hours of study together each week. Some training and orientation is available to you. Our goal is to provide one-on-one support to help learners get their spoken English to a level that helps them find work, or talk with their child's teacher, or understand their family doctor.

Mission Statement

The mission of Global Emergency Response and Assistance is to protect human rights, and restore the dignity, well-being, and safety of those physically, emotionally, and mentally affected by conflicts. We provide aid and assistance to refugees, new arrivals in host countries, and internally displaced persons. By providing such individuals with immediate relief, supporting their resettlement process, and advocating for their rights, we help support the values of human dignity and human rights.

Description

GERA -- we build lasting relationships with individuals and families in need. We respond to their needs by connecting our newest residents with one another, offering language programs that lead to their social and economic independence, and advocating for their full participation in our communities. We understand that for vulnerable populations, reclaiming dignity and establishing economic independence are equally important outcomes. We’ve grown GERA from the ground up with an inspired team and expert advisors, and with your support, we look forward to reinforcing our programs and welcoming our newest neighbors.
