Overview:
The Education Department intern will work with staff implementing the Zoo’s education programs. The intern will gain a greater knowledge and understanding of the needs required for developing and maintaining education programs in a non-formal setting. The intern will include assisting the Education Specialist with the development of curriculum and materials for Spring and Summer Safari camps. The intern will also assist the Education Specialist with Education Events including the planning of events, development of interpretive materials, and oversight of volunteers staffing the events. The internship is unpaid, but there are many other benefits that will afford interns a valuable experience in informal education.
Duties
- Assist with curriculum development for Spring and Summer Safari Camps
- Assist with the gathering of materials for Spring and Summer Safari Camps
- Conduct informal programming and guest experiences through trail hosting with interpretive education carts
- Assist with the planning and execution of on-site Education Events (approximately 2 per month starting in March)
Qualifications
- Be a current undergraduate or graduate student
- Be available for at least a three month commitment
- Be able to make at least a 160 hour commitment
- Occasional weekends required
- Have reliable transportation to and from the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk, VA
