ORGANIZATION: Santa Maria Public Library - Santa Maria Public Library

Volunteer would work with library staff, volunteers, veterans, and veteran service organizations to provide one-on-one support to people who have served in the military. Serve as a point of contact to veterans and veteran families to ensure they know how to get connected to the state and federal benefits and services they have earned through military service.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week. Monday-Saturday, during regular library hours.
Library hours are:
Monday-Thursday: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
Friday-Saturday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Length of Commitment: 6 month commitment.

Training: Required training is provided via online training modules available at www.calibrariesforveterans.org. Additional training is offered by library supervisor and via webinars or on-ground workshops from CalVet or other Veteran Service Organizations on as needed basis.

Benefits of Volunteering: Honor veteran's service. Training and experience in interviewing, needs assessment, and information and referral.

The Santa Maria Public Library provides materials and services to help community residents obtain information to meet their personal, educational, and professional needs. The Library features current, high demand, high interest materials in a variety of formats for persons of all ages in both Spanish and English. Special emphasis is placed on stimulating young children's interests to foster an appreciation for reading and learning.

Description

The Santa Maria Public Library is a full service public library offering books, eBooks, movies, books on CD, print and emagazines, and newspapers for the public. Computers are available for 2 hours of use each day with a library card. Computers have Microsoft Office Suite and access to the internet. Wifi is available in the library. Art is displayed in several areas of the library. A meeting room is available for rent by nonprofit and profit groups. Study rooms on the second floor are available for use with a library card. Reference and Children's services offer special programs for adults, children, and teens including storytime, movies, author visits, and informational programs. The library is dedicated to helping kids discover the joys of reading as well as introducing them to the library. Central Coast Literacy Council is located in the library and matches tutors to English learners.
