Minnesota Heart Gallery

We are looking for talented photographers anywhere in Minnesota to volunteer with the Minnesota Heart Gallery. The Minnesota Heart Gallery provides children and youth awaiting adoptive families in Minnesota the chance to see themselves as they never have before, and invites the community to learn more about the right of every child to a permanent family.

The Heart Gallery provides a free, professional portrait session to youth in the foster care system with a photographer in their area. The pictures from these sessions are used in the youth’s adoption recruitment materials and we also use the images to raise awareness about the need for permanent families for older kids - literally putting a face to the need.

This can be a one-time gig or a few sessions a year, whatever works best for you. Volunteering entails a session with the youth (you coordinate the time and date, along with location, with the youth’s adoption recruiter or social worker) and then post-session, provide a disk or Dropbox folder of images. Visit the online gallery at www.minnesotaheartgallery.org.

Minnesota Heart Gallery recognizes the overrepresentation of BIPOC youth in the foster care system. As a result, the majority of youth who participate in the Heart Gallery are youth of color. We recognize the importance of youth of color seeing adults who look like them in various aspects of life. Minnesota Heart Gallery is committed to working and collaborating with more BIPOC photographers to help contribute to this representation. We also prioritize BIPOC photographer whenever paid opportunities come up. If you are interested in participating in this, please contact our Heart Gallery Coordinator at teiana@ampersandfamilies.org

Thank you and we look forward to sharing more with you about this awesome volunteer opportunity!

About Ampersand Families

Location:

1751 County Rd. B W, Suite 300, Roseville, MN 55113, US

Mission Statement

Ampersand Families provides permanency and adoption services to older youth and families who face barriers to equity in child welfare, and champions systemic changes that advance belonging, dignity and hope. Our vision is that every young person whose life has been disrupted by trauma and subsequent child welfare intervention will be restored to a safe, permanent family with an urgency that honors the brevity of childhood.

Description

Ampersand Families is the only adoption agency in Minnesota whose services are all aimed at providing permanency and adoption services for older youth and families who face barriers to equity in Minnesota's child welfare system - that's older youth (mostly ages 10 and older), Black, brown and Indigenous and GLBTQ youth. The agency provides child specific recruitment services to youth, training/home studies and support to relative and non-relative families, and consultation and training regarding equity in the delivery of permanency services.

Ampersand Families is committed to ensuring that youth retain connections to relatives, kin, community and culture even as they experience the heartache of being involved in the child welfare system. Whenever possible, we strive to achieve permanency with a relative or someone already known to the youth. We welcome non-relative families to the adoption process and support them to navigate the complex world of helping youth heal from trauma.

Ampersand Families provides adoption services through the Public Private Adoption Initiative (PPAI), funded by Minnesota Department of Human Services. The margin of excellence and innovation that are standard at Ampersand Families' are funded by generous foundation, corporate and individual donors.

We are also the home of Minnesota Heart Gallery--a statewide effort, benefiting from nearly 150 volunteer photographers, to promote awareness of waiting youth. Visit the gallery at www.minnesotaheartgallery.org.
