Sweetbriar Nature Center is located on a beautiful 55 acre woodland preserve in Smithtown, New York on Long Island. Sweetbriar is dedicated to providing local residents with wildlife rehabilitation and nature educaiton. Being a small staff we are always looking for people who enjoy nature to help with caring for our resident animals, to act as a receptionist to the public who visits here, and to use their own persnoal skills from computer work to gardening to carpentry to support the staff at the center.

Mission Statement

Sweetbriar Nature Center's mission is to provide natural science education and wildlife rehabilitation services for Long Island residents of all ages.

Description

Sweetbriar is located on a 55 acre nature preserve adjacent to the Nissequogue River featuring wetland, forest, and field habitats. The nature center itself is located in a rustic old mansion. Inside are exhibits focusing on the natural world, live, highlited by a mock rainforest room. There are over 50 non-releasable animals on the property and in the nature center including birds of prey, parrots, iquanas, snakes, farm animals, and much more. An enclosed butterfly and moth garden is one of the center's prize attractions. The center offers nature programming to schools, scouts, civic organizations, seniors, and the general public at large.
