Time Commitment
- 5 hours per week
Key Responsibilities
- Engage 4 th grade or 7 th grade students in rigorous science education.
- Prepare materials for hands-on science lessons.
- Assist with instruction of lessons as needed.
- Help facilitate field trips to the Living Lab.
- Assist with classroom management.
Volunteer Impact
- Help students to believe and achieve in science.
- Expose underserved youth to innovative science curriculum.
- Spark student interest science careers.
Commitment
- One 5 hour shift per week from January 8 th to March 23 rd, 2018.
- Time for the shift varies between 7am-4pm.
- One required orientation for all Science Education Mentors.
- Tuesday, January 9 th, 2018 from 4:30-7:30pm.
- One required field trip training based on your chosen grade level.
- 7 th grade - Monday, January 8 th, 2018 from 9:30am-12pm at Cabrillo National Monument.
- 4 th grade - Saturday, January 20 th, 2018 from 10am-1pm at the Emory Cove Wetland.

- Strong interest in the science, conservation, or education fields.
- Dedication to serving underserved youth.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interested in gaining education experience.
- Ability to communicate in Spanish.

Description
The programs of Ocean Discovery Institute offer intensive, hands-on learning opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth. Programs are offered throughout the year. The programs employ three basic strategies: classroom and field-based programming in partnership with Title 1 schools, intensive after-school and summer programs, community-based habitat restoration events.
