The Multilingual & Multicultural Center at the Portland Public Schools is seeking volunteers to assist middle school students at King Middle School's Newcomer Center both academically & linguistically. In addition to serving students at King, the Center serves new arrival middle school students from Portland's other two middle schools: Lincoln and Lyman Moore.
Currently, we are recruiting native language Arabic speaking volunteers from our community who are willing to mentor new students from the same cultural and linguistic background. As a volunteer you will be asked to work one on one assisting with basic literacy and serve as a role model to the students.
The ideal volunteer will be flexible but have the ability to consistently commit to a minimum of 1-2 hours per week by semester. Some prior work as an academic tutor or experience in educational settings is preferred but not necessary. If you have time, value education and want to make a difference in the community, this is a great opportunity.
The hours are flexible. The Center is open during the school day with extended hours after school. The Center is staffed and oversight will be provided by education professionals.
If you are interested, please complete our online application, at www.mlc.portlandschools.org and we will contact you right away.
