Prison Volunteer, Facilitator (Airway Heights Corrections Center)
ORGANIZATION: Freedom Project
Please visit the new page to apply.
Join Freedom Project inside the Airway Heights Corrections Center as we provide opportunities for folks who are incarcerated to practice Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and mindfulness. Volunteers can engage in the prison classes and workshops in multiple ways, including as facilitators (please see other posting!), assistants, or even just as class participants.
Freedom Project classes run at this facility 16 weeks at a time on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. These class series range from an introduction to Nonviolent Communication to more advanced practice groups.
We expect class and workshop facilitators to have...
- Experience in facilitation or interest in expanding these skills
- A deep NVC or mindfulness practice
- A non-heirarchical and anti-oppressive approach in facilitation
- Social justice lens that brings an awareness of the prison system, mass incarceration, racial equity, and anti-oppression frameworks
- Time commitment of 6+ months (given the time it takes to process new volunteers through the prison and the long-term nature of our prison programming)
If you do not feel comfortable stepping into the facilitator position, please consider joining as a regular prison volunteer! We welcome skills of all levels, as there are many ways to engage within the prison classroom. Additionally, Freedom Project works to provide training opportunities around these various skills (including a monthly anti-oppression training, NVC trainings, and facilitation skill workshops).

Description
Freedom Project is an innovative educational organization serving folks inside prison and folks recently released back into the community. Our programs focus on Nonviolent Communication and mindfulness.
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a practical tool used worldwide for over four decades to help people transform blame, anger and criticism into understanding, effective communication and peaceful resolution of conflict. The basic skills of NVC require mindfulness in their application. Mindfulness helps people become aware of their thoughts and actions before responding.
Currently, we provide regular programming at the following prisons:
* Monroe Correctional Complex (Twin Rivers Unit and Washington State Reformatory) in Monroe, WA
* Airway Heights Correctional Complex in Spokane, WA
* Clallam Bay Correctional Complex in Clallam Bay, WA
* Washington Corrections Center for Women at Purdy in Gig Harbor, WA
Freedom Project hopes to expand its programs to encompass major prisons throughout Washington State.
