AmeriCorps St. Louis is dedicated to emergency and disaster response. Our team of full-time Members deploy to disasters both locally and nationally. One such emergency is closer to home.
In 2009, at the urgent request of the City Department of Human Services, AmeriCorps St. Louis began partnering with Winter Outreach to provide emergency shelter to the homeless when the temperature drops below 20 degrees. At these frigid temperatures, the homeless St. Louis City population of around 1,300 people, face life-threatening consequences without a warm place to sleep. Each winter, however, AmeriCorps St. Louis is ready to open doors of our Winter Warming shelter to those in need. We rely on volunteers to help us continue to give those without anywhere else to go a place to sleep on the coldest nights of the year.
Our shelter is part of a network of emergency shelters that coordinate to ensure that there are always doors open when the weather threatens the safety of those without a place to sleep. We urgently need volunteers to sign up to assist us during winter weekends, Thursday-Saturday.
Volunteers will assist with shelter logistics: setting up, checking folks in, helping guests to have a safe stay, and serving meals. If you are interested in helping us out, you can select your weekend availability here: http://bit.ly/2jwuk4W
