Here’s your chance to lend a helping hand at the largest walk-in free tax preparation site in Central Indiana. You can learn to prepare taxes and make a difference at the same time by becoming a volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program .

Qualified volunteers should possess strong computer skills, attention to detail, customer service skills and the ability to understand and answer questions about the tax preparation process and individual tax situations. All volunteers will receive training and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) certification.

Your role as volunteer continues to be the most important part in our ability to deliver free tax services to our community. In 2017, volunteers prepared more than 6,100 tax returns for Central Indiana residents at no cost, resulting in more than $5.6 million in federal refunds returning to the community and $1.5 million saved in tax preparation services.

The following volunteer opportunities are available:

Greeter/Screener - as a greeter/screener, you’ll greet everyone visiting the site. This role is perfect for those who have no interest in preparing tax returns but love socializing and talking to people. You’ll screen taxpayers to determine the type of assistance they need and confirm they brought all the necessary documents to have their tax returns completed. Tax law certification is useful but not required for this position . Greeters will complete a brief ethics training online.

Tax Preparer - after successfully completing your tax law certification, as a volunteer tax preparer, you will provide free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers using electronic filing software. Tax law certification is required for this volunteer role .

Quality Reviewer- as a quality reviewer, you will conduct a quality review of all tax returns completed by volunteer tax preparers, ensuring that every taxpayer receives quality service and an accurate tax return. Tax law certification is required for this volunteer role .

Interpreter - as an interpreter, you’ll provide language interpretation services to customers who are not fluent in English. Basic tax knowledge is helpful but not required for this position . Primary languages needed are Spanish and sign language.

Administrative Assistant - if you have excellent organizational skills, volunteering as the site administrator may be the position that fits you best. The site administrator acts as the primary resource for sharing knowledge of the program and assists with issues that may arise. The administrator helps answer the phone, complete tax site reporting, maintain supplies, and completes other administrative functions. Tax law certification is not required for this position .

VITA will provide the resources and materials needed to complete both online and in-person training. The online portion of the training can be completed at your pace, and several "classroom" training sessions will be held this fall and winter. Training opportunities are available now. Contact us for more information.

Mission Statement

John Boner Neighborhood Centers inspires neighbors and partners to improve the quality of life on the near eastside by providing tools for change and growth.

Description

John Boner Neighborhood Centers, a 501(c)3, was founded to serve Indianapolis’ near eastside residents. In 1971, neighborhood residents determined the need for a community center. With their help, John Boner and Dick Moore set up a card table and two folding chairs in an office on East 10th Street, and the near eastside Multi-Service Center was born. Throughout the years, our philosophy has inspired the creation of services and programs in response to the changing needs within our community.

The energy, commitment and dedication of center staff is the driving force behind our success and the unique opportunities offered to our neighbors. Through programs, services, and community development initiatives, staff help to inspire and support those who are committed to thriving towards an improved quality of life: Not just for themselves, but for the community they live in.

We believe that neighborhood-driven efforts are essential in developing a healthy, thriving and vibrant community. We provide numerous tools for change and growth for our residents and community partners. Through our work, we inspire hope and foster change to improve the lives of those we serve.
