GirlsFirst is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design, and Math) program designed for female-identified high school students of color. Our program promotes racial equity, leadership development, social-emotional learning, and a passion for STEAM. A portion of our after-school program is dedicated to providing students with personalized homework help.
Details:
- Interact with high school students and promote positive peer interactions.
- Provide one-on-one and small group assistance with homework or academic needs.
Volunteers commit to providing students with one-on-one and small group academic support at least one day a week during the following times:
- YWCA Alvirita Little Center (708 Martin Luther King Jr. Way): Mon-Thurs, 4-6pm
- Franklin High School (3013 S Mt Baker Blvd): Mon 5-6pm
- Rainier Beach High School (8815 Seward Park Ave S): Wed, 4-5pm
Qualifications:
- General proficiency in high school science and math.
- Experience working with youth in tutoring or mentoring role.
- Ability to motivate and provide direction, as well as excitement for teaching or tutoring.
- Patience and understanding of barriers faced by high school youth with multiple life transitions and how this affects their focus, learning, behavior, and consistency.
- Must be able to support and affirm youth with diverse cultures, racial and ethnic identities, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, abilities, and countries of origin.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Able to make a three month commitment.
All volunteers will also attend a site orientation with supervisor that covers an introduction to the program and the position. Continued coaching will be provided by supervisor and on-site program staff.
