Wilderness Survival Skills Literacy Mentoring Program

At McKinley Elementary, a Tulsa Public School, we have two 6th grade classes that meet on consecutive days, once a week, in the Library. The classes meet between the hours of 12:45 and 1:30. All of the 6th graders are reading the Gary Paulson, outdoor survival book, Hatchet. Two issues have led me to reach out to the Tulsa Community for help, yet one really stems from the other. The biggest issue is that we have a wide range of reading sWe are reaching out to the community to ask for two mentors for each session to both speak to the group as a whole on Wilderness Skills, Wilderness Disasters, engaging topics that will lure our students toward classroom engagement. With students buying in to the lesson content, our hope is that they will be in a better frame of mind to want to succeed in building reading skills. By helping these students build reading proficiency skills, we hope to leave a number of the behavioral issues behind and start building a community of successful 6th graders that are prepped and ready to move on to Middle School next year.
