Class of 2017

The Envisioning Youth Empowerment Retreat is a week-long residential summer camp for youth with visual impairments. We aim to prepare visually impaired students for college and independence by exposing them to peer mentors, available community resources and giving them real world experiences. We are seeking a person to help us develop and enhance our website. We are seeking to add components to our website where students can access courses and other tools. We would like to expand our work on social media too. Our website is www.eyeretreat.org.

Location:

1217 MANASSAS CT APT C, RALEIGH, NC 27609, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide an opportunity for youth with visual impairments to experience a glimpse of post secondary outcomes (employment, college, etc) through development of mentoring relationships, real world applications, and identification of available resources.

Description

The EYE Retreat aims to squeeze five years of one's life into five days to prepare them for the rigor and expectations of college life. The EYE Retreat begins day one with the transition from senior year of high school to freshmen year of college with activities focused on getting to know your roommate and preparing for the first day of class. Days two, three, and four aim to include many of the activities one would experience during their freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior years of college. These may include transportation, communicating with faculty, money management, vocational rehabilitation, disability services, and assistive technology. A mock class is also included during this time that will serve as the foundation for the coursework. Finally, the fifth day is dedicated to activities to transition from college life to community living. In particular, accessible sports, cooking, and career exploration are noteworthy activities.
