The Volunteer ESL Tutor meets 1 to 2 hours once a week at a regularly scheduled time and place* for a minimum of 6 months with an adult ESL student who wants to improve his or her English conversation, writing and reading skills. The tutor’s mission is to help the student achieve his or her personal goals and therefore organizes and conducts the tutoring sessions accordingly. Volunteers tutor at libraries or a mutually agreed upon location*. You may continue tutoring the same student longer than 6 months, if mutually interested. Tutors must be at least 20 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Patience, sensitivity, and flexibility are essential. You are not required to know the student’s native language.
*Due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, tutoring will be conducted in an online format using virtual meeting applications. Tutors and learners will need to be able to facilitate and host their own online meetings for the foreseeable future.
No additional volunteer opportunities at this time.
