DANK Volunteers
Whether they're serving Weisswurst at Maifest or greeting visitors to the Museum, our volunteers are vital to helping the DANK Haus bring German culture to Chicago.

The DANK Haus German American Cultural Center is looking for volunteers to support our many programs and cultural events. Note: German language skills are not required for these opportunities (but are always welcome!). We invite applications from volunteers interested in working as greeters, docents, library assistants, or event volunteers:

-Greeters: Our museum, gallery, and library are open Monday - Friday (1:00pm - 5:00pm) and we would like to extend these hours to Saturday as well. Greeters would welcome guests, keep an eye on the collections, and respond to basic questions from visitors.

-Docents: Train to assist in giving occasional tours of the DANK Haus to tour groups. The ideal docent would be comfortable with public speaking and would train to provide informative and entertaining tours through our museum, gallery, and ballroom.

-Library assistants: The DANK Haus features a small German-language library of over 7,000 books. We are in the process of updating our catalog. We need assistance proofreading the existing entries, adding call numbers, and entering recent acquisitions. The ideal library assistant would have a basic reading knowledge of German or at least a keen attention to detail to be able to spot inconsistencies in the records.

-Event volunteers: We could always use help with our many cultural events. Please apply if you are interested in bartending (+21 only), welcoming attendees, staffing information tables, helping with set up/take down, working a register, making and hanging decorations, or other miscellaneous support tasks.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to preserve and promote German culture, heritage, and language through activities including, but not limited to, maintaining a center consisting of a museum, art gallery, library, and language school, and organizing educational and social programming focusing on and emphasizing the history, traditions, and contributions of Germans and German Americans.

Description

DANK Haus is a 501(c)3 organization that depends on donor and volunteer support to allow us to meet and expand our mission and goals. As a German American cultural center, we strive to preserve and promote German and German American culture in the city of Chicago. We do this by providing low cost language classes for all levels and all ages. DANK Haus also shows classic and contemporary German films. We also provided cooking classes to spread the wonders of German kitchens. Our museum highlights important moments of German American life in our exhibit "Lost German Chicago." Our art gallery hosts up to four exhibits a year from both German American and community artists. DANK Haus also screens important German soccer matches. We also take part in the Maifest street festival. This festival is our largest fundraiser of the year.
