ORGANIZATION: Free Rein Center for Therapeutic Riding and Education

Free Rein Center for Therapeutic Riding and Education (www.freereincenter.com) facilitates horses helping humans heal through equine-assisted activities and therapies. We offer therapeutic riding in the fall and spring, hosted at Rockbrook Camp's riding center on Greenville Highway in Brevard.

We are seeking horse leaders and side walkers for the spring and fall of 2018. Both horse leaders and side walkers commit to an 8-week session in the spring (March - May) and/ or fall (September - November).

Our Horse Leaders have had experience with horses and are comfortable dealing with them. This person understands the nature of the horse and can control it under unusual circumstances. This person will receive training from the instructor to perform the duties of the horse leader, including what to do in an emergency situation.

Sidewalkers walk beside the horse and the rider. This person helps with the rider’s safety and helps the rider carry out the instructions given by the instructor. There may be one sidewalker for a rider or two sidewalkers for a rider with poor balance. The sidewalkers work together for the safety of the rider. Sidewalkers need to feel comfortable walking next to a horse and to be knowledgeable about the rider’s disability or problems. If a rider has more than one sidewalker, one of the sidewalkers will be designated as the head sidewalker.

Both roles require attendance at one of our training and orientation days, with upcoming dates to be determined. Please contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteers@freereincenter.com or our program director at programs@freereincenter.com.

Mission Statement

Serve the community by strengthening the spirits, minds and bodies of children and adults through interaction with horses.

Description

Free Rein is dedicated to the principle that all of us, whatever our abilities, are capable of more than we think--and that together we can help build a more caring and compassionate world.

Our programs utilize the human-horse connection as the therapeutic agent in working with many diverse groups ranging in age from childhood to senior citizen status.

The therapeutic benefits of structured interaction with a horse are recognized by many in the medical professions. Individuals with cognitive, emotional, physical, and relationship challenges can grow in self-esteem, confidence, self-awareness, and communication skills. Those with physical disabilities, can achieve improved balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility.

Therapeutic riding is beneficial for:

  • ADD or other Hyperactivity Disorder
  • At-risk youth & emotional and behavioral difficulties
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Cerebral palsy & muscular dystrophy
  • Down syndrome
  • Family & grief counseling
  • Learning disabilities
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Strokes & traumatic brain injuries
  • Visual and auditory impairment

Free Rein’s vibrant, growing programs are successful because of our hard-working staff and dedicated volunteers. We all depend heavily on the generosity of our supportive donors.

Free Rein is accredited by, and follows the professional standards of, PATH International. Our approach with horses is one that respects the horse and is mindful of their ways in nature.

Our carefully chosen and specially trained instructors are certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.).
