Books!

Bright Star Books' will be hosting a Free Book Fair on Tuesday, November 13 at Pfeiffer Elementary School in Akron, for their students in grades Kindergarten through 3rd. The book fair will be from approximately 7:30-8am to 1:30-2:30pm, with the final schedule to be set soon. We need about 5 volunteers at a time, but we welcome help from those available for part of the day.
For those of you unfamiliar with how we run our Free Book Fairs, we will have 2-3 thousand books laid out on a dozen or so tables, sorted by type (picture books, early readers, chapter books, nonfiction, etc) as well as separated by grade equivalence level. One class will visit at a time, and about 5 students at a time will be allowed to walk around the table to pick out five books (per student) to take home as their own, all for free! You as a Bright Star Books volunteers will work one-on-one with students to help them find books that they are excited about and appropriate to their current reading ability. Volunteers will also help restock the tables with books between visiting classes, and occasionally change the tables to be appropriate to higher or lower grade levels, to match the classes coming in.
These Free Book Fairs are one of the most rewarding events BSB is involved with, because the children are always very excited to be able to select new books about their favorite characters, or new books in their favorite series. I hope you can join us on November 13!

Mission Statement

Mission:

The mission of Bright Star Books, Inc. is to promote a culture of reading by increasing access to and ownership of books for limited-resource children in the Greater Akron region. We aim to do this at the earliest possible age to ensure children grow up habituated to the potential of books as sources of learning and joy.

Vision:

Bright Star Books aims to compliment and collaborate with existing early childhood development and literacy organizations in the Greater Akron region to build a sustainable community network that brings books into the homes of limited-resource children and gives every family the chance to develop a lasting love of reading and learning. Utilizing the latest developmental research, and embracing a model where community participation, capacity building, and research are critical, we seek to identify and fill gaps in existing programs so that every child - regardless of race, ability, socioeconomic status or cultural capital - has the resources needed to grow up in an environment where developing a love for reading is possible.

Description

Bright Star Books gives books these ways:

-We build libraries in transitional housing shelters, so young children displaced by poverty or violence can still experience the joy of reading;

-We give childrenʼs libraries to teen mothers with limited access to books;

-We partner with service agencies like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) of Summit County to distribute gently used, developmentally appropriate childrenʼs books through their clinics, serving thousands of low-income women and children from pregnancy to age five.
