Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to volunteer in the classroom as a writing, research or art coach. You'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.
These workshops needs your support in East Harlem. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code and date(s) you choose. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

About the program: Third-graders read My Chinatown: One Year in Poems by Kam Mak to understand similarities and differences between Chinese and American culture. In addition to taking a field trip to the Museum of Chinese in America, students will gather facts with support from classroom research coaches. Writing coaches will help them polish their final drafts of short informational texts that compare and contrast their lifestyle to that of Chinese children.
